The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Father Jean André Cuoq, priest, missionary, author and linguist, was born in France in 1866. He entered the Sulpician order in 1843, and was ordained in Paris in 1845. In 1846, he became a missionary to the Indians at the Lake of Two Mountains near the town of Oka in the Canadian province of Québec.
